WHAT IS AN e-PORTFOLIO?

Electronic portfolio, learning portfolio, academic MySpace/Facebook…Consider this space as the place for making thinking visible. An e-portfolio is essentially a website to record your ongoing reflection and analysis of your intellectual development during your four year college experience.

When you write about your education during the process of learning, you more deeply consider the conceptual thread among classes, internships, jobs and social engagements. When you can see connections that are important to you in the way you are learning, the learning becomes more meaningful.

An eportfolio makes your thinking visible to you and to those who are looking at your educational experience—advisors, teachers, peers, employers, parents, and graduate schools. The learning site has the potential to demonstrate an authoritative voice as you develop and make clear your learning personal goals and objectives.

Think about electronic portfolios as if they were an academic Facebook. Look for connections, colliding information, overarching thematic interests and holistic expressions. The portfolio provides a venue for seeing the big picture.

Specifically, the e-portfolio encourages a student to organize and creatively present evidence of her intellectual and personal development and academic achievements during her four-year college career through self-reflection and metacognitive appraisal of the learning process.

WHY develop AN e-PORTFOLIO?

  • Advising guidance
  • Show and connect to colleagues and peers with similar goals and interests
  • Make thinking visible (to graduate schools, internships and employers who might want to see more in depth evidence of how you develop and present your ideas
  • Demonstrate technology currency
  • Demonstrate visual literacy
  • Demonstrate an authoritative voice
